Sir Walter Scott’s Courtroom Reopens for 2025 Season with an Exciting Events programme Rantin Rovin Romantics

Sir Walter Scott’s historic courtroom has opened its doors for the 2025 season on Saturday, 29 March, welcoming visitors back to the iconic location where Scotland’s literary giant once served as sheriff. This unique courtroom, nestled in the heart of the Selkirk, offers a rare glimpse into the past, allowing guests to step into the space where Scott presided over legal matters as part of his role in the local community. Visitors will be able to explore the room where the world-renowned author, poet, and historian conducted his judicial duties, gaining insight into the intersection of his literary life and public service.

In addition to the courtroom’s reopening, the 2025 season marks the second year of the Rantin Rovin Romantics programme, a series of monthly poetry events celebrating the rich literary heritage of Scotland. This year’s programme kicks off in a grand fashion with a full day of events on, 8 May, dedicated to commemorating 80 years of VE Day. The day will feature a variety of talks, show-and-tell sessions, and culminate in an evening of poignant poetry, reflecting on the impact of the end of World War II.

“The Rantin Rovin Romantics programme has something for everyone,” says Phoebe Stewart, Assistant Curator. “From celebrating the end of WW2, to exploring the equine in poetry, as well as a fun but spooky Halloween event, we’ve curated a diverse range of events that highlight the depth and variety of Scotland’s literary traditions.”

This year’s programme promises to captivate and inspire audiences, with monthly events continuing through the season, celebrating everything from Scotland’s literary heritage to unique poetic themes. Each event provides an opportunity to engage with the works of poets, authors, and the cultural landscape that shaped Scotland’s creative past and present.
