Jim Clark Motorsport Museum Celebrates New Funding

Duns’ Flying Scotsman: Rediscovering Jim Clark

The Jim Clark Motorsport Museum has been awarded a Sporting Heritage grant of £500 to preserve a missing part of Jim Clark’s legacy. The museum was offered a number of segments  of an STV interview of Jim Clark from 1965, one of the most successful years of his motor racing career. These were restored and donated by Mike Gower, a retired TV producer.

Jim was a notably shy person and this is an interview with Graham Gauld, a friend as well as a journalist, made at the then new racing circuit at Ingliston in the late summer of 1965. Jim speaks candidly about racing and winning at Indianapolis, the premier race in US motor racing.

Part of the donation is silent footage of a segment of the Freedom of Duns ceremony in the same year at which Jim Clark was made a freeman of the burgh, the first in the history of Duns. The museum intend to tie this together with an audio recording of the entire ceremony to reunite the material into a single experience.

The grant enables Jim Clark Motorsport Museum to digitise, preserve and interpret the digital collections in the museum. Live Borders will be working with Mike Gower and the team of Jim Clark volunteers to identify and preserve this important part of the collection.

Kenneth McLean, the Learning & Engagement Officer for the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum, said: “It is wonderful to have surviving audio and film recordings of Jim, ranging from formal interviews to unique candid footage – and that new material continues to come to light. This grant is the first step in ensuring we preserve these rare fragile records for future generations, and in allowing a wider audience to experience them today”
