Share Your Memories of the Chambers Institution – Discover how two local lads paved the way for learning
From William Chambers initial concept behind the Chambers Institution to its opening in 1859. This exhibition looks at the importance of this cultural hub to the town of Peebles from the past, present and its potential future plans for this iconic building. Explore and discover how the Chambers brothers founded W. & R. Chambers Publishers in 1819 and how they started The Chambers Journal in 1832 as well as the world-renowned Chambers Encyclopaedia and Chambers English Dictionary. Find out how the Chambers brothers used printing processes such as typesetting by hand to machines that mechanise processing type. Discover the history behind book bindings and the importance of book covers and illustrations alongside the printed word from past to present day.

Ever wondered what’s behind that door? Where do we keep all our objects? Take a free guided tour to find out the staff secrets at the Chambers Institution in Peebles. Tours last approximately 50 minutes.
No booking required – meet outside in the Quadrangle. Pleas be aware, the building is 165 years old – there are a few stairs and only partial lift access.
