Chared wood

Fire/Fogo/Feu; Art in Flames by Chris Ewing

Fire/Fogo/Feu; Art in Flames by Chris Ewing

Charred Wood artist Chris Ewing presents his first exhibition after nearly a decade of creating handmade woodburning art.

Using a range of tools including pyrography pens and blowtorches, Chris burns designs on carefully selected hardwoods sourced from the Scottish Borders. With nature and wildlife as the predominant themes in his work, he takes inspiration from the Borders and Northumberland where he lives with his young family.

He favours burnt art featuring British wildlife, with a focus on the eyes and the texture of the fur, skin or feathers that are enhanced by layers of shading with flames.

Chris studied illustration and graphic design at College in Edinburgh and is a self-taught pyrographer, picking up the skills and techniques over 10 years as a hobby and now as a full-time pyrography artist.
