Paula Rowan – The Wild Side Exhibition at Borders Textile Towerhouse

Paula Rowan is a self-taught artist brought up in Newcastleton.  Her passion for drawing and art began very early, but the creative side of her life had to take a back seat when she began training as a nurse.  It wasn’t until after the birth of her boys that she began to pick up her pencils again.  Initially it was just for her own pleasure, but soon what began as a little bit of dabbling grew and grew until ‘Paula Rowan Art’ was born.

Paula’s style and techniques have evolved over the years, with each piece of work helping the artist to learn and progress.  Her new work in this exhibition at Borders Textile Towerhouse is inspired by all things ‘fluffy and fabulous’ and showcases her love of animals and nature.

Paula works to build layers of acrylics, creating depth and colour, texture and movement.  She also blends pastels to soften the effect, creating that lustrous fur and finally adding embellishments of gold leaf to capture the animal’s unique character and sparkle of life.

Paula describes her art as ‘A sanctuary… an escape from the stresses of day-to-day life.  I can get lost in my of creativity for hours at a time.  I hope that my love of animals and nature shines through with each piece of work.’
