Athletes go the distance at Selkirk Triathlon

The 2023 Live Borders Triathlon Series continued over the weekend with athletes taking on the Selkirk event for the first time since 2019.

Great conditions greeted the junior athletes on Saturday, with Sunday’s Standard event and a new Family Participation event taking place on Sunday.

The Selkirk Standard route is the longest distance on offer in the Live Borders Triathlon Series and 78 competitors took on the gruelling 1500m swim, 38.83km cycle and 10.01km run.

Sebastian Davies was the fastest finisher in a brilliant time of 02:07:06, 59 seconds clear of Craig Dale who came in second.

Eilidh Miller was the first female across the line, in a time of 02:29:46 ahead of Sarah Scott who finished in 02:33:49.

Running alongside the Standard event was Live Borders’ first Family Participation Event, focusing on introducing a younger audience to the sport while encouraging the whole family to take part.

On Saturday morning, 40 juniors took part in the event, ranging from 8 years of age, through to 15-16 year old age bracket.

Neil Renton from the Live Borders Triathlon Team said the event was a great success.

“It was wonderful to see the event return to Selkirk after four years.

“It was great to see the range of junior athletes, families and senior athletes all taking part and enjoying the weekend.

“We had some really positive feedback from parents and kids alike on the Family Participation Event. This was the first time we have staged an event like this and is something we are keen to build on in the future and grow the Triathlon community.

“We must say a huge thank you to all the staff and volunteers who came and helped us run the event – without them it would not be possible.”
